I love the way good music, film and art can cause us to question our preconceived notions, encourage us to greatness and change our ideals. So many times I have been left with thoughts, questions and ideas I never knew I needed to wrestle with through experiencing good art.
The other day I was watching A Knight’s Tale starring Heath Ledger for the hundredth time. This movie is a fun ride, and I’m always down for any rags to riches story. I love the way the director uses contemporary music and cultural-isms to re-imagine a medieval story. It’s definitely a fresh take when David Bowie and Queen are integrated into the fabric of the soundtrack!
The part of the movie that really sticks with me long after the credits roll is the underlying theme of improving yourself beyond what is considered possible (changing your stars). I think it is healthy to push yourself to greatness, but trying to do it without a plan seems foolish. So far in my life I wish I had been more intentional with pushing forward to change my stars. William Shakespeare said, “Be not afraid of greatness; some are born great, some achieve greatness, and others have greatness thrust upon them.” Thinking of this in my own life I realize that I was born to relatively normal circumstances…no silver spoon, no royalty in my blood and no phenom-like gifts or abilities. I have yet to achieve greatness so far, but I feel like I have a clue at how to achieve it. As unsexy as it sounds it boils down to one word…effort. Most don’t have greatness thrust upon them until they have worked hard and are prepared to receive the responsibility handed to them. Football coach Joe Gibbs said, “A winning effort begins with preparation”, and I’ve seen this time and time again in art and life.
It is in this spirit that 7 Day Demo was born. Putting one foot in front of the other, and slowly but surely creating something bigger than myself. There is no way to know what could become of it unless I put in the effort first, and just like A Knight’s Tale maybe some of the art I create will cause you to hear, ponder and reevaluate as well. Who knows, 7 Day Demo is still in its infancy, but you know what they say: the sky – nay, THE STARS are the limit!
